As of August, 2004 there is a choice between an automatic installer and a manual installer. For database work the manual installer has the advantage of including the Pear DB modules which are similar to the Perl DBI approach. To install PHP manually

extension_dir = "./ext"and un-comment the extentions for dbase, mysql, oracle and pgsql and the graphics library gd2. (ODBC support is built in.)
